use your mind to pimp your text
By audhill | August 8, 2007

I’m not about the shizzle (which must be, by now, a corny mid-21st century equivalent of groovy), but I like to nod in the direction of the cool now and then. And what better way to do that than to give kids access to tools and tutorials that help them personalize their content? The reliably amazing blog, Life Hacker , via Drawn!, my favorite for illustration and cartooning, provides a link that helps them do just that.
Photoshop Roadmap is definitely a site to keep going to. For this occasion, they’ve compiled a list of great online tutorials for graphic manipulation of text in Photoshop. It’s got me thinking about independent learning. Helping our students to become independent learners improves their chances throughout school and life. It’s not that I think that they should be independent in all things, but I notice that when they come to me each fall, they rely entirely on me to tell them what to do, define what’s good, evaluate whether they’ve got enough. I spend a year breaking that habit down, teaching them that when the question is something they can answer for themselves, then they should do so. It’s a key skill and it’s part of the evolution from childhood to adulthood. Jacking their header up to establish pride of ownership is great. But, better still is engaging them in independent learning at the same time.
